On 15 September 1997, the Psittacine Bird Club (Today the Pretoria Parrot Club) was established during a meeting with Jaap and Isabel Oosthuizen. The main purpose was to establish the Bird Club in Pretoria area.

Jaap Oosthuizen was elected first chairman and Isabel Oosthuizen secretary. Among the founding members were Kobus Lubbe, Louis and Rene Slabbert, Willie Scheepers and Tommy Poole.

It was therefore decided to meet on the last Tuesday of the month.

The first 3 meetings were in Jaap and Isabel's house. The following year was held in Sawelkop Primary School hall. From 1999 to the end of 2000 the meetings were held alternately on Saturday afternoons at the members' houses. From 2001 we moved the meetings to Hermanstad Primary School. Met Tuesday of the month.

In 1999, Willie Scheepers was elected chairman. In 2002 Johan Pretorius was elected chairman. Charl Swanepoel was elected chairman in 2005. ʼn Constitution was also drawn up in 1997 with the following OBJECTIVES:

To establish and promote the highest possible code of ethics for its members.

To promote trust and honesty regarding parrots and thereby promote trust in all parrot breeders and prospective breeders for its members.

To serve as a mouthpiece for its members and to act on their behalf.

To promote liaison between members of the club.

To handle, promote and protect the interests of its members in parrot breeding.

To devote himself to the development of parrot breeding and to provide the necessary facilities and services there.

To keep the parrot breeder informed on local and international issues and to provide guidance on the best methods to promote parrot breeding.

To work with and affiliate with similar international organizations. To keep its members informed at all times and to the best of its ability regarding all the latest proposed rules and regulations.

To affiliate or register with the authorities where appropriate.
